한동대학교 전산전자공학부 이성민 학부생을 중심으로 구성된 Ship-BoB 연구팀이 세계 최대 해킹/보안 컨퍼런스인 DEFCON에서 선박 사이버 보안 연구를 발표하는 성과를 거두었다. 본 프로젝트는 2023년 Best of the Best(BoB) 12기 과정에서 진행되었다.
BoB는 한국정보기술연구원(KITRI) 주관의 차세대 보안리더 양성 프로그램으로, '정보보안 우수인재 양성을 통한 국가적 보안 난제 해소'라는 목표 아래 2012년부터 운영되고 있다. KITRI는 2010년부터 다양한 정보보안 인력양성 사업을 추진해 왔으며, BoB 프로그램을 통해 대한민국 최고 수준의 차세대 보안리더를 양성하고 있다.
Ship-BoB 팀은 지난 8월 9일 미국 라스베가스에서 개최된 DEFCON 33 MHV(Maritime Hacking Village)에서 'Boarding the VSAT: Real-World Exploits, Testbed Validation, and Policy Gaps in Maritime Connectivity'라는 주제로 선박 위성통신 보안 취약점에 대한 연구를 발표했다. 또한 연구팀은 해당 프로젝트를 바탕으로 2025년 1월 SCIE 저널인 IEEE Access에 논문을 게재하여 학술적 성과도 함께 달성한 바도 있다.
이번 성과는 BoB 프로그램의 우수성과 한동대학교의 국제적 연구 역량을 보여주는 사례로 평가받고 있다.

Seongmin Lee, an undergraduate student in the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Handong Global University, has achieved notable success as the lead member of the Ship-BoB research team. The team presented their research on maritime cybersecurity at DEFCON, the world's largest hacking and security conference. This project was conducted as part of the 12th cohort of the “Best of the Best” (BoB) program in 2023.
BoB is a premier training program for next-generation cybersecurity leaders, hosted by the Korea Information Technology Research Institute (KITRI). Since its inception in 2012, the program has aimed to foster outstanding talent in the field of information security to help solve critical national security challenges. KITRI has been leading various cybersecurity education initiatives since 2010 and continues to develop top-tier security professionals through the BoB program.
On August 9, the Ship-BoB team delivered a presentation titled "Boarding the VSAT: Real-World Exploits, Testbed Validation, and Policy Gaps in Maritime Connectivity" at DEFCON 33’s Maritime Hacking Village (MHV), held in Las Vegas, USA. The presentation highlighted critical vulnerabilities in satellite communication systems used in maritime environments. In addition to the conference presentation, the team has also achieved academic recognition by publishing their research in the SCIE-indexed journal IEEE Access (January 2025 issue).
This accomplishment serves as a testament to both the excellence of the BoB program and the global research capabilities of Handong Global University.
